Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team started out its three-game series with two wins by the scores of 15-9 and 14-7 over non-conference opponent MIT on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 15-3 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer 15, MIT 9
The Sagehens were led by David Bedrosian who went 3-5 in the win with three RBI's and one run scored. JC Ng, Caleb Milikan and Jimmy Legg all also tallied multi-hit games for the Sagehens.
Harry Deliyannis got the start in game one and went five full innings and gave up three runs, one earned, off of three hits. Eric Prough earned the win as he came on in relief and the Sagehens had relief appearance from Enoch Kim and Stephan Kwak as well.
The Sagehens and Engineers kept the bats quiet for the first three innings, but MIT got the scoring going in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer to left center to take the first lead of the day at 2-0. MIT added one more in fourth off of a sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead.
The Sagehens got one back in the bottom of the fifth after a sacrifice fly by Isaac Kim cut the lead down to 3-1 but the Engineers got out of it without any more damage as the Sagehens left the bases loaded.
Pomona-Pitzer actually loaded the bases again in the bottom of the sixth for the second consecutive inning and this time were able to get back-to-back runs via the bases loaded walk to tie the contest at 3-3 and then a defensive miscue gave the Sagehens their first lead of the game at 4-3. The Sagehens followed up with a bases clearing double by Jackson Fleming to break the game open with a 7-3 lead and continued to pile on with 11 runs in the inning and after RBI's from Matt Nishimura and David Bedrosian, took a commanding 12-3 lead.
The Engineers got one back in the top of the seventh, but the Sagehen bats continued to roll as Nate Jakobs hit a pinch-hit homerun and JC Ng singled home two more to extend the lead to 15-4.
MIT brought home four runs in the top of the ninth, but the Sagehens still cruised to a win in game one.
Pomona-Pitzer 14, MIT 7
The Sagehens were led by Kim and Ng who tallied seven of the Sagehens' nine hits in the win. Kim went 4-6 at the plate with three RBI's and a run scored while Ng went a perfect 3-3 with three walks and had three RBI's and three runs scored. Joe Williams got the start on the mound in game two and went three innings with four runs surrendered while Jake Albro and Ethan Collins came in relief with Collins picking up the win.
MIT jumped out to an early lead again in game two after getting their leadoff runner on by an error, the Engineers earned an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. The Engineers added three more in the top of the second after a few errors by the Sagehen defense allowed some runners to reach base and were cleared by a three-run homer to extend the MIT lead to 4-0.
The Sagehens cut into that lead in the bottom of the third after a Ng two-run shot to center, but MIT answered with a homer of their own in the top of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead over Pomona-Pitzer.
Pomona-Pitzer started to chip away at the lead with an RBI single by Isaac Kim in the bottom of the fifth, but MIT kept the Sagehens away with two more in the top of the sixth to push the lead to 7-3.
The Sagehens continued the theme of loading bases against the Engineers while the MIT pitching staff helped the Sagehens get back four runs in the bottom of the sixth by walks and hit batters to tie the game at 7-7 and then another wild pitch gifted the Sagehens an 8-7 lead.
The MIT staff tallied 12 total walks in the game and continued to get themselves into jams with the bases loaded. The Engineers walked three more in the bottom of the eighth and then a hit batter plated four runs for the Sagehens before RBI singles from Bedosian and Kim capped off the doubleheader sweep for the Sagehens over MIT.
