CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis Team beat their fourth-straight top-10 ranked team with a 6-3 win over No. 9 Amherst on Tuesday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-1 overall.
The Sagehens fell behind after doubles with just one of the three wins. Pomona-Pitzer had their only win at No. 1 doubles as the team of Maria Lyven and Nina Ye came away with an 8-5 win. The Sagehens fell at No. 3 as Georgia Ryan and Janie Marcus lost 8-2 and a close battle at No. 2 went to Amherst as the team of Alex Coleman and Patria Aziz fell in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-5).
The Sagehens made up their ground during the singles competition with five wins in six matches.
Pomona-Pitzer evened the score at No. 3 singles with Angie Zhou making quick work of her opponent with a 6-0, 6-3 win to make it 2-2.
The Sagehens pulled ahead with a win at No. 2 singles as Ye doubled her wins on the day with a 6-0, 6-3 win and then the Sagehens pulled within on point of clinching after a win at No. 5 singles with Marcus getting the win 6-4, 6-4.
The clinch point came at No. 4 singles as Markey took a big first set by way of a tiebreaker 7-6 and then finished off her opponent 6-2 to give the Sagehens the win.
The final win of the day for the Sagehens came at No. 6 singles with Ryan going three sets after she took set one 6-2, fell in set two 3-6 but came back for a 7-5 win to end the day for Pomona-Pitzer.
