Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team opened up their three-game conference series with a 7-3 win over Occidental on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 11-3 overall and 2-2 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Ryan Nishi who went 2-4 on the day with a solo home run in the win while David Bedrosian, Caleb Milikan, Jackson Fleming, Kevin Lo, Jack Damelio and Jimmy Legg also got hits for the Sagehens. Harry Deliyannis got the ball for game one and picked up his fourth win of the season after going 5.2 innings and surrendered one run off of seven hits and tallied eight strikeouts. Joe Williams came in to relieve Deliyannis and went the remaining 3.2 innings and gave up two runs but held on to give Deliyannis the win.
Occidental got the game going on the very first batter as they leadoff with a solo shot to center field to take an early 1-0 lead. After surrendering a run in the first inning, Deliyannis settled in and did not allow another run for the remainder of his outing.
The Sagehens got their offense going in the bottom of the fifth as they took the lead on an error by the Tigers' defense to take a 2-1 lead. The Sagehens added one more from the bat of Nishi who blasted a solo shot to center field to extend the lead to 3-1 and RBI's from Damelio, Legg and another solo shot from Bedrosian in the seventh put the Sagehens on top 6-1.
The Tigers got their second run of the game in the top of the eighth after an error by the Sagehens, but Pomona-Pitzer got it back by way of a bases loaded walk to take a 7-2 lead.
Occidental was able to add one more run in the ninth, but it wasn't nearly enough to mount a comeback as the Sagehens came away with the series opening win at home.
