Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team finished off a sweep of non-conference opponent Whitworth with a 4-1 and a 14-13 win on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 9-1 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer 4, Whitworth 1
The Sagehens needed only four hits to get the win as Kevin Lo, Caleb Millikan, Ryan Nishi and Jimmy Legg all registered hits. Legg led the way with solo home run for an RBI and a run scored. Brett Super got the win in game one to improve to 3-0 on the year with six innings pitched and gave up one run with 10 strikeouts. Jake Albro came in for two innings of relief work while Eamonn Woods came on for the save.
The Pirates jumped out to an early lead in their first at-bats with back-to-back doubles to take a 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens thought they had the tying run scored in the bottom of the second, but an appeal at home plate off of a wild pitch got the Pirates out of the inning with the lead.
It took the Sagehens until the bottom of the fifth to record their first hit of the game in the form of a double by Nishi and it would pay off as the Sagehens tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Jack Damelio to make it 1-1 after five.
Pomona-Pitzer took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth off of the bat of Millikan who smacked an RBI double to the wall to bring in Lo to give the Sagehens a 2-1 lead. The Sagehens added one more after an error in the outfield brought in the second runners of the inning to give the Sagehens a 3-1 lead.
The Sagehens added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot by Legg, his first home run of his career, to put the Sagehens in front 4-1.
The Pomona-Pitzer defense stayed solid late in the game as Woods shut down the Pirates to turn his first save and give the Sagehens the win.
Pomona-Pitzer 14, Whitworth 13
The Sagehens were led by Lo who went 2-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the win. Ethan Collins ended up with the win while Eric Prough recorded his first save of the season.
Whitworth got out to a three-run lead in the top of the second until the Sagehens had a huge, nine-run bottom of the fourth to take the lead. David Bedrosian, Jack Damelio, and Ben Morgan all singled with the bases loaded to start the scoring while RBIs from Legg, Isaac Kim and Nishi put the Sagehens up 9-3.
After giving up nine in the bottom of the fourth, the Pirates came back with a nine-run inning of their own in the top of the fifth to take the lead at 12-9.
The Sagehens would have to then respond again with four runs in the bottom of the fifth after RBI base hits from Legg and Lo and a sacrifice fly from Kim to take a 13-12 lead.
The Pirates came back with one run to tie the game at 13-13 on a sacrifice fly, but the Sagehens answered with a sacrifice fly of their own in the bottom of the sixth by Damelio to take a 14-13 lead. Prough came on for the Sagehens in the seventh and after he retired three outs for the Sagehens, the game was called due to darkness and declared final after seven innings of play.
