Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team came away with a draw against No. 11 CMS on Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field
With the draw, the Sagehens move to 5-3-1 on the year and 3-2-1 in SCIAC play.
A hard-fought, physical game in the first leg of the Sixth Street Rivalry that saw seven yellow cards, including one by each coach. The tone was set early as the Stags recorded their first yellow of the match in the first 15 seconds after a hard foul in the air on the Sagehens' captain prompted an immediate yellow from the head referee.
The Sagehens and Stags had a defensive battle early on as neither team could really get its offense going with a limited amount of scoring chances in the first half. However, the Sagehens broke through first in the 30th minute after Graeme Logan lifted a cross to Jeffrey Tiglon who then took a touch and slotted it to the bottom right of the keeper to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.
After leading for the following 10 minutes, the Stags got their game-tying goal in the 42nd minute as a cross in was deflected on by the CMS attacker and just over the hands of the Sagehen goalkeeper to tie the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The Sagehens and Stags both has their chances in the second half as the Stags outshot the Sagehens 5-1, but Pomona-Pitzer had the only shot on goal in the second half as the two teams remained tied and headed to overtime.
Pomona-Pitzer had one big chance early in the first overtime period after Kyle Lau got the ball in the box down the left wing and crossed into corridor of uncertainty, but a ricochet landed straight to the arms of the CMS keeper as the game remained tied.
The Sagehens offense dominated the overtime possession as CMS packed the defensive third and wouldn't let the Sagehens get the golden goal in overtime as the first leg of the Sixth street Rivalry ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Sagehens will next hit the road as they travel to Chapman on Saturday, October 9th at 11:00 a.m.
