CLAREMONT, CA. – The Sagehens earned a 1-0 victory over Willamette on Sunday, in a rainy and physical match at home.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens start the season 3-0-0.
Pomona-Pitzer came out attacking, creating several chances in the opening minutes. Aidan MacLennan tested Willamette goalkeeper multiple times early, while Ryo Kasai also created opportunities for the Sagehens. MacLennan had a chance to put Pomona-Pitzer ahead from the penalty spot in the 17th minute, but his attempt was saved. The rainy conditions made for a gritty battle, with both teams fighting for possession and playing a physical game from start to finish. The intensity was evident throughout the match, with seven yellow cards handed out between the two teams. Despite the early chances, neither team was able to break through in the opening 45 minutes. Gavin Honey made a key save in the 30th minute to keep Willamette off the board, sending the teams into halftime scoreless.
The Sagehens finally broke through in the 61st minute when Mikel Mackey scored his first collegiate goal and found the back of the net to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead. The Sagehens continued to create opportunities after taking the lead, with Kasai forcing another save in the 62nd minute and Hartfelder adding a shot shortly after. Willamette pushed for an equalizer late, but Honey and the Sagehens' defense held firm. Honey made another save in the 86th minute, and Pomona-Pitzer closed out the final minutes to secure the 1-0 victory. The Sagehens remain unbeaten through their first three matches of the season, continuing their strong start to the 2026 campaign.
