Box Score LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team came away with a 9-5 win in game one of their three-game series with Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne on Friday afternoon at Ben Hines Field. With the win, the Sagehens improve to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Jeremy Jess who went 2-4 on the day with three runs scored and two RBI's. Jack Damelio also tallied a two-hit performance going 2-4 with two runs scored in the win. Ryan Long got the start for the Sagehens on the road and picked up the win in another impressive outing with 6.2 innings pitched, three earned runs and three strikeouts. Harry Deliyannis came on in relief for Long and went two inning before Luka Green came on for the final out of the game in the ninth.
The Sagehens struck first in their first at-bats of the game as Seth Stone brought home a run on a ground out to let the Sagehens play from in front with a 1-0 lead.
La Verne answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first but the Sagehens had a big third inning as Ryan Nishi cleared the bases with an RBI double to give the Sagehens a 4-1 lead.
La Verne came back with one run in the third and two more in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 4-4 but the Sagehens responded with another three-run inning with RBI's from Jack Hanley and Jeremiah Quezada to reclaim the lead at 7-4.
Pomona-Pitzer added two more runs in their next at-bats as Jeremy Jess blasted his first home run of the season to cushion the Sagehens' lead at 9-4.
The Leopards got one run back in the bottom of the ninth off of a wild pitch and had runners on base but the Sagehens shut down and chance of a comeback to take game one at La Verne.
The Sagehens will next host La Verne for a double header on Saturday, February 29th at 11:00 a.m.
