Box Score 2 PASADENA, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team split in their away double header against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Caltech with a 13-2 win and a 3-2 loss on Saturday afternoon at North Field.
With the split, the Sagehens win their opening series and move to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer 13, Caltech 2
The Sagehens were led by Kevin Lo who went 3-5 in the win with six RBI's and one run scored. Jeremiah Quezada registered the only other two-hit performance as he went 2-4 with two runs scored. Brett Super picked up the win with 6.2 innings pitched, gave up two runs and struck out a career-high 14.
Both teams got out to a slow start to begin the game as the first run of the game came in the top of the third inning as Lo grounded out to bring in the first run of the game to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead. The Sagehens and Lo added one more in the top of the fifth on an RBI single before the Sagehens plated four runs in the top of the sixth. Jack Hanley started out the scoring with an RBI double and then came around to score off of a passed ball to push the lead to 4-0. The Sagehens added two more after Lo tripled home two runners to cap off the inning at 6-0.
Caltech responded with one run in the bottom of the sixth off of a solo shot to left field but the Sagehens closed out the game with seven runs in the seventh inning. The Sagehens got three runs off of two walks and a hit batter and doubles by Jack Damelio and Lo extended the lead to 12-1. Caltech responded with one run in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't close the gap to within 10 runs as the Sagehens mercy ruled the Beavers in seven innings, 12-2.
Pomona-Pitzer 2, Caltech 3
The Sagehens were led by Damelio who went 3-5 with two runs scored. Lo also had a two-hit performance at 2-4 with one RBI.
The Sagehens started out with a run in the top of the first after Lo singled home Damelio but Caltech responded with a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1. The Sagehens and Beavers then went five scoreless frames until the Sagehens scored in the top of the eighth off of a sacrifice fly from Ryan Nishi.
The Beavers then came back in the bottom of the ninth after an error brought home the tying run and then a walk-off on a bases loaded walk gave the Beavers a win in game two.
The Sagehens will next travel to SCIAC opponent La Verne on Friday, February 28th at 2:30 p.m.
