Pomona-Pitzer Opens SCIAC Play With 10-1 Win Over Caltech

Box Score

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech 10-1 on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-2 overall and start the year with a win in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Jack Damelio who went 3-4 in the win with two runs scored. Seth Stone, Ryan Nishi and Jack Hanley all contributed with two hits apiece while Hanley knocked in three runners and Nishi drove in two. Ryan Long got the start for the Sagehens and picked up the win with seven innings pitched, gave up one run off of four hits and eight strikeouts.

After three innings of scoreless baseball, the Sagehens got on the board with a big fourth inning that plated four runs. The Caltech defense came away with a few errors in the inning to assist the Sagehens in getting some runners on base. After loading the bases, the Sagehens got their first run of the game on a walk followed by an error to extend the lead to 2-0.  Pomona-Pitzer earned two more runs in the inning as Nishi singled home two Sagehens to push the lead to 4-0.

Caltech got their only run of the game in the top of the seventh off of a sacrifice fly to cut the lead down to 4-1, but the Sagehens answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 10-1 lead.  Seth Stone got the scoring going for the Sagehens with a two-run double to left center followed by a run on a hit by pitch and a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 7-1.  Hanley then capped off the big inning with a three-run blast, his first homer of the year, to push the lead to 10-1.

The Beavers survived the mercy rule but a solid outing by Connor Woods out of the Hen Pen with two scoreless innings closed out the game for the Sagehens with a win in their opening game of conference play.

The Sagehens will close out the series with the Beavers on Saturday, February 22nd as they travel to Caltech for a double header beginning at 11:00 a.m.
