CLAREMONT, CA. – Saturday's NCAA Regional Semifinal ended in a victorious note for the No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis Team as they defeated the No. 19 Trinity University Tigers 5-1. The Sagehens managed to win two of the three doubles matches and battled out to three singles victories thanks to Maria Lyven, Jacinta Chen, and Caroline Casper to complete the match.
In the doubles round, Caroline Casper and Jay Kim broke out of 3-3 deadlock and cruised to an 8-4 victory over Andrea De Leon and Francesca Canjar in no. 3 doubles. Over in no. 2 doubles, Margherita Andreassi and Rebecca Salaway lost 8-3 to Caroline Kutach and Megan Flore in no. 2 doubles. All eyes were on court one where Maria Lyven and Arianna Chen were holding off a comeback by Mary and Zoe Kaffen, but the Sagehens duo ultimately prevailed with an 8-7 victory thanks to an 8-3 tiebreaker.
In the singles round, Maria Lyven made quick work out of Ashley DeBauge in no. 2 singles, dominating with a pair of 6-0 sweeps.
The Sagehens earned their fourth point when Jacinta Chen managed to battle out to two close set victories against Andrea De Leon in no. 4 singles, winning the first set by a close 6-4, and taking the second set 7-6. Caroline Casper dropped her first set 6-2, but came back with a 6-4 and 6-3 victory to seal the match for the Sagehens.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next face cross-street rival No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. for the NCAA Regional Final.
