Men's Tennis: No. 13 Sagehens Split Saturday Doubleheader Against Trinity; Chapman

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 13 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team split in their doubleheader with a 5-4 loss to Trinity (Tx) and a 6-3 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Chapman on Saturday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.

Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 9-10 overall and 4-0 in SCIAC play

Trinity 4, Pomona-Pitzer 5

The Sagehens got into a hole early on against the Tigers as they dropped all three of the doubles matches to start the day. Octave Bellet and Josh Gearou fell at No. 1 doubles 8-5 and the Sagehens went on to drop two close matches at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles as Avery Bicks and Charlie Stark fell 8-7 as well as Jed Kronenberg and Nils Skattum falling 8-7 to head into singles down 3-0.

The Sagehens started out with wins at No. 4 singles and No. 6 singles with Jacob Schoenherr getting a 6-4, 6-3 win and Jansen Comadena earning a 6-0, 6-3 win to trim the lead to 3-2.

The Sagehens also took wins at No. 2 singles with Gearou coming away with a three-set win as he dropped set one 6-2 but came back to win 7-5 and 6-1 to earn the win. Quinn Hirsohn also earned a three-set win for the Sagehens after he dropped set one 7-5 and came back to win 6-2 and 6-4 for the win. Pomona-Pitzer won four of the six singles matches but the Tigers earned wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to seal the win over the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer 6, Chapman 3

Pomona-Pitzer started out with two of the three doubles matches to start their SCIAC match against the Panthers. Avery Bicks and Charlie Stark took an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles while Jack Bernstein and Parth Desai also won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

The Sagehens took four of the six singles matches against the Panthers with wins at No. 1, 4, 5 and 6. Comadena earned a win at No. 1 singles after his opponent was retired after set one. Skattum earned a win in straight-sets at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-1 while Desai and Jack Weiler also won in straight-sets by the scores of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-3, respectively.

 Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to SCIAC opponent Caltech on Friday, April 12th at 3:00 p.m.
