CLAREMONT, Calif. – Drew Goldman captured the ITA West Regional singles championship on Sunday, completing a dominant three-day run at the regional tournament and becoming the first Pomona-Pitzer men's singles champion since 2021.
Goldman, the No. 1 seed, did not drop a set throughout the tournament and lost just five games in his five matches. He opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Gustavo Marcanth of Redlands before defeating No. 6 seed Josh Kim of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-4, 6-1, in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Goldman continued his run with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 5 seed Kristian Sharma of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. He then earned a 6-4, 6-4 semifinal win over No. 3 seed David James Brownlee of Azusa Pacific to advance to Sunday's championship match. Goldman capped the tournament with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 5 seed Sibi Raja of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the final, securing the regional championship without dropping a set.
With the championship, Goldman also helped Pomona-Pitzer complete a historic sweep of the men's and women's singles titles, as Sophie Lau captured the women's championship. It marks the first time since the 1990s that the Sagehens have won both ITA West Regional singles titles in the same year. The Sagehens most recently had a men's singles champion in 2021, when Owen Kelley captured the title. That same year, Kelley and Jansen Comadena also won the men's doubles championship. Over the course of the tournament, Goldman and Lau combined to win 10 matches without dropping a set, losing just 42 games across the three days of competition despite triple-digit temperatures. Goldman will advance to the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia which will start on Oct. 15
Sam Saeed and Terry Zhang also reached the semifinals in doubles, before falling to Sharma and Wilson who went on to win it all on Sunday morning.
