Baseball: Sagehens Drop Game One To Whittier, 5-3

Box Score

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Opponent (SCIAC) Whittier 5-3 on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 14-13 on the year and 4-12 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by sophomore Seth Stone who went 3-5 in the loss with two runs scored.

Each team was able to put one run on the scoreboard by way of an error early on. Whittier got out to a 1-0 lead after a failed pickoff attempt ended up brining in the first run of the game, but the Sagehens tied the game after an error by the Poets' center fielder brought home Stone to tie the game at 1-1.

The Sagehens and Poets both scored again in the third inning as Whittier brought home a run on a ground by and the Sagehens responded with a sacrifice fly to even the score at 2-2. The Poets would then come back and strike for their second consecutive inning as a solo homer gave them a 3-2 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer tied the game back up in the bottom of the sixth after sophomore Hunter Hennigh singled home junior Jeremiah Quezada but a two-run eighth gave the Poets the upper hand with an RBI double and an RBI single to take a 5-3 lead.

The Sagehens had the tying run at the plate in the ninth but the Poets were able to get out of it with a game-ending double play to secure the win.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to Whittier on Saturday, April 13th for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
