Baseball: Sagehens Hold Off Bowdoin At Home, 10-8

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team defeated non-conference opponent Bowdoin 10-8 on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 13-3 overall.

The Sagehens had three players with multi-hit games. Junior Nolan McCafferty went 2-5 with three RBI, junior Jeremiah Quezada went 2-4 with two runs scored and senior Andrew Phillips went 2-4 with a run and a RBI. Sophomore Jake Patterson-Kohout got his first start of the year and went 5.1 innings while giving up four runs off of six hits with three strikeouts. Junior Connor Woods came on in relief and picked up the win as he went 2.1 innings and first-year Gabe Garcia got his first save as he recorded the final four outs of the game.

The Sagehens and Patterson-Kohout got out to a rough start in the first inning after a three-run homer gave Bowdoin an early 3-0 lead. The Polar Bears added one more run in the top of the second but then Patterson-Kohout settled down and pitched a scoreless remainder of his outing.

After trailing 4-0, the Sagehens got their first run of the day in the bottom of the second as senior Andrew Phillips connected for a RBI single to cut the lead to 4-1.

Pomona-Pitzer cut the lead down to one run after a two-run fifth with junior Nolan McCafferty singling home first-years Kevin Lo and Jack Damelio to trim the lead to 4-3.

The Sagehens took the lead in their next at-bats after first-year Adrian Banales cleared the bases with a double down the left field line to score three runs to take a 6-4 lead. Pomona-Pitzer added two more as Lo and McCafferty earned RBI's to extend the lead to 7-3.

The Polar Bears made it interesting in the top of the eighth as they plated three runs to cut the lead down to one at 8-7, but the Sagehens added a few insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as Lo and Jess earned RBI's to push the lead to 10-7.

Bowdoin was able to get one run in the ninth off of Garcia but the Sagehens stayed strong on defense and held off the Polar Bears for their 13th win of the season.
