Men's Tennis: No. 12 Sagehens Defeated Cal Lutheran And Whittier On Opening Day

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team came away with two wins as they defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponents Cal Lutheran 6-3 and Whittier 8-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Season impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC play.

Pomona-Pitzer 6, Cal Lutheran 3

The Sagehens swept the doubles competition against the Kingsmen to come away with a 3-0 start. Avery Bicks and Charlie Stark got the Sagehens going with a clean 8-0 win in the No. 3 doubles followed by wins at No. 2 and No. 1 as Jed Kronenberg and Jansen Comadena got a win at No. 2 by the score of 8-4 and Octave Bellet De Giacomoni and Josh Gearou finished doubles with a win at the No. 1 spot, 8-4.

The Sagehens continue their dominance into the singles competition as Nils Skattum won in straight sets at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0 and Bicks clinched at the No. 4 spot 6-3, 7-5 to give the Sagehens the win at 5-0.

Kronenberg followed up with a win at No. 1 singles by the scores of 6-1, 6-1 and Cal Lutheran would go on to take wins at the No. 5, 3 and 2 singles to end the day.

Pomona-Pitzer 8, Whittier 1

Pomona-Pitzer opened up the match with two of the three wins coming from the doubles competition. Bellet and Josh Gearou opened up with a win at the No. 1 spot by the score of 8-2 and Bicks and Stark followed up with a win of their own at the No. 2 position by the score of 8-5. Quinn Hirsohn and Sam Gearou fell at No. 3 as Whittier was able to salvage a point with an 8-6 win.

The Sagehens went on to sweep the singles matches against the Poets. Bellet got the Sagehens going with a 6-2,6-1 win in straight sets at the No. 2 spot followed by a Jacob Schoenherr win at No. 5 by the scores 6-2, 6-1.

The Sagehens clinched at No. 3 singles as Sam Gearou won in straight sets by the scores of 6-2, 6-2 and Pomona-Pitzer went on to win the final three matches of the day with Parth Desai earning a 6-3, 6-2 in at No. 6, Kronenberg won at No. 1, 6-4, 6-3 and Hirshohn ended the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot as the Sagehens earned two wins in the SCIAC.

Up Next: The Sagehens will return to the court as they next travel to Azusa Pacific and Occidental on Saturday, February 16th at 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
