Baseball: Knapp Goes 4-4 As Sagehens Take Series Opener 7-4 Over Caltech

PASADENA, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech 7-4 in game one of their SCIAC three-game series on Friday afternoon at North Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 2-0 to start the year and 1-0 in SCIAC play.  

The Sagehens were led by junior Brian Knapp who went a perfect 4-4 with four runs scored and one RBI in the win. Junior Tyler Yoshihara got the win for the Sagehens as he went seven innings with 10 strikeouts and four runs surrendered. Freshman Joe Williams got the save for the Sagehens as he came in for the final two innings and did not give up a single hit in his relief outing.

Pomona-Pitzer wasted no time getting ahead on the road as they struck for four runs in the top of the first. After freshman Kevin Lo started the inning with a walk, the Sagehens went on to score on four consecutive batters. Junior Jeremy Jess brought home Lo on a sacrifice fly, junior Jeremiah Quezada doubled home Knapp, sophomore Seth Stone followed with a double to bring home Quezada and junior Jack Hanley singled home Stone to give the Sagehens a 4-0 advantage.

The Sagehens added one more in the second after junior Nolan McCafferty singled home Knapp to extend the lead to 5-0. The Beavers struck back in the bottom of the third with two runs to cut the Sagehens' lead down to 5-2, but each team scored one run in the fourth as Knapp connected for an inside the park home run to move the score to 6-3.

Caltech got within striking distance as they added one more run in the bottom of the seventh after an RBI triple, but the Sagehens added an insurance run in the ninth as Quezada doubled home Knapp to push the lead to 7-4 as the Sagehens left Pasadena with a series opening win over the Beavers.

Up Next: The Sagehens will host Caltech for a double header on Saturday, February 23rd beginning at 12:00 p.m.
