Women's Tennis: Sagehens Split Double Header Against Caltech; Cal State LA

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team split their double header Saturday with a 7-2 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech and a 4-5 loss to non-conference opponent Cal state LA at the Pauley Tennis Complex.

Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in ther SCIAC this season.

Pomona-Pitzer 7, Caltech 2

The Sagehens got on top early against the Beavers with two wins in the doubles compeiton. The first-year team of Margherita Andreassi and Maria Lyven got the first win of the day in the No. 2 doubles spot, 8-3 followed by the team of senior Caroline Casper and junior Jay Kim earning a win at No. 1, 8-3 as well. The No. 3 doubles match was forfeited giving the Sagehens a clean sweep of doubles.

Pomona-Pitzer went on to win four of the six singles matches. Casper went on to win her singles macth as well at No. 1 by the scores of 6-3, 6-1 while Lyven also doubled her win total on the day and clinched for the Sagehens with a victory at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

Andreassi got the last win of the day for the Sagehens at No. 4 singles by the scores of 6-1, 6-1 while the Beavers forfeited the No. 6 singles match giving the Sagehens a 7-2 victory.

Cal State LA 5, Pomona-Pitzer 4

The Sagehens fell behind during the doubles competition as Cal State LA walked away with a 2-1 lead. The Sagehens got the opening win of doubles as the team of Andreassi and Lyven earned an 8-4 win at the No. 2 doubles. Cal State LA earned wins at No. 1 and No. 3 as seniors Arianna Chen and Lucy Jiang fell 8-6 at No. 1 and sophomore Jacinta Chen and junior Rebecca Salaway fell at No. 3 8-3.

The Sagehens fell in the opening match of the singles competition as first-year Melisha Dogra lost her match at No. 3, 6-4, 6-0. The Sagehens came back with a point at No. 6 singles as Salaway earned a 6-1, 6-0 win but Cal State LA came back with wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles to clinch the win.

Pomona-Pitzer also had wins at No .1 singles as Casper won 7-6 (4), 6-3 and Jacinta Chen finished off the day with a win at No. 4, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next compete in the ITA Indoor National Championships against Carnegie Mellon on Friday, March 1st at 2:00 p.m.
