Women's Tennis: Sagehens Finish as Runners-Up In ITA Indoor National Championships

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team fell in the ITA Indoor National Championship match to Emory 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles and Sagehens met in the Indoor Championship match last season as well with Emory also winning 5-4.

The Eagles jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead with an 8-0 win at number three doubles by Katie Chang and Daniela Lopez. Emory's Bridget Harding and Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico provided the second doubles point with an 8-5 decision over the Sagehens' Mary Ann Zhao and Emily Chen.

Pomona-Pitzer's Carolina Casper and Shivani Doraiswami had a chance to salvage the final doubles point for the Sagehens. They forced a match tiebreak against Emory's Anna Fuhr and Stephanie Taylor but were unable to bring balance to the match, dropping the tiebreaker 5-7.

Courts one and two were the star courts for the Eagles in singles. Freshman Ysabela Gonzales-Rico won in her match against Mary Ann Zhao of Pomona-Pitzer 6-3, 6-2.

With match points looming on courts one and five, Bridget Harding on court one took down Pomona-Pitzer's Carolina Casper 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Eagles just two minutes after Gonzales-Rico took her match.

Up Next: The Sagehens next return home to take on Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, March 10th at 3:00 p.m.
