Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Whittier 9-8 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Jack Hanley and Duncan Skerrett who both went 3-4 in the win. Brian Knapp, Nolan McCafferty and Andrew Phillips all had two hits as well in the win.
After a scoreless first inning of play, the Poets and Sagehens brought out the bats in the second. Whittier got things going with a five spot in the second off of four hits, two walks and a hit batter to take an early 5-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer responded with four runs in their next at-bats. Adam Hinthorne got the Sagehens on the board with a sac fly to center field, then Brian Knapp banked a ball off of the center field wall to bring home one more and Nolan McCafferty capped off the inning with two RBI's off of a liner to right field to bring in Knapp and Jake Patterson-Kahout to cut the lead down to 5-4
The Poets added two more to their lead in the third but the Sagehens came roaring back in the fourth and fifth innings. Knapp continued his power streak with a two-run homer to right field in the fifth and the Sagehens added two more in the fifth with RBI's from SKerrett and Phillips to take a one run lead at 8-7.
Whittier tied the game on a ground ball in the sixth to tie the game at 8-8 but the Sagehens showed great discipline late in the game as they forced the Poets' pitching staff to walk in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 9-8 lead.
Brett Super came on in relief of Jeremy Jess to start the seventh inning and was absolutely rock solid in his relief outing as he went three innings of no-hit relief work to pick up the win and secure the win in the ninth.
