Women's Tennis: Sagehens Fall In SCIAC Championship To CMS, 5-4

REDLANDS, CA. – The No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team fell to No. 1 CMS by the score of 5-4 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship on Saturday night at the Verdieck Courts.

The Sagehens came into the finals as the No. 2 overall seed after defeating No. 3 Redlands 5-1 in the Semifinals.

Pomona-Pitzer started out with a 2-1 lead after doubles as Mae Coyiuto and Maddie Gordon won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles and Grace Hruska and Joy Kim won their match at No. 2 doubles 8-5.

 The Sagehens finished off the Bulldogs with three-straight wins at No. 3, 4 and 5 singles. Arianna Chen earned a win at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-1 win and Coyiuto followed up with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4. Pomona-Pitzer clinched their spot in the SCIAC Championship as Kim earned a win at the No. 5 spot as she defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-2.

After the win over the Bulldogs, the Sagehens turned their attention to the No. 1 seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas in the SCIAC Championship match.

Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Sagehens fell at No. 1 doubles with Zhao and Emily Chen falling 8-2. The Sagehens earned a win at No. 2 as Casper and Arianna won 8-4 and Hruska and Kim put the Sagehens up with an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Athenas earned the first win of singles play to tie the score at 2-2 in the No. 5 spot as Kim fell in her singles match to Lindsay Brown, 6-2, 6-1. CMS took over the lead as they won the next singles match at No. 3 as Arianna Chen fell to Catherine Allen, 6-1, 6-4.

Pomona-Pitzer came back to tie the match at 3-3 after Caroline Casper won at the No. 1 singles match as she defeated Kyla Scott 6-4, 6-2, but CMS came right back with a win at No. 2 as Zhao fell to Nicole Tan, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.

With CMS only needing one more win to clinch the SCIAC Championship, the Sagehens needed a win at both the No. 4 and No. 6 singles spots. Coyiuto came back after dropping the first set to Jessie Cruz 5-7 and rallied for a 6-4 win in set two and a 6-1 win in the third set to even the score at 4-4 with one match left.

The match all came down to the No. 6 singles match between Emily Chen and Katie Kuosman. Chen lost in a hard fought first set by the score of 7-5 and found herself down 4-1 in the second. Chen battled back to cut the score to 4-3 but Kuosman was able to hold her off and clinch the SCIAC Championship for CMS with a 6-3 victory.
