Baseball: Sagehens Take Two At Home Against Caltech

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech 5-4 in walk-off fashion in game one and run ruled the Beavers 16-6 in game two on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 12-15 overall and 4-8 in SCIAC play while the Beavers drop to 6-20 and 1-14 in conference play.

The Sagehens were led by junior Matt Omori who went 2-4 with two runs scored. Senior Kevin Jordan, senior Tanner Nishioka, junior Adam Hinthorne and freshman Tyler Yoshihara also tallied multi-hit games

The Beavers were led by Mark Burleson who went 3-4 with one RBI and one run scored for the Beavers in the loss.

The Sagehens jumped ahead of Caltech as they got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second as Yoshihara singled to center field to bring in Omori as the Sagehens took a 1-0 lead.

Caltech responded with in their next at-bats as they took the lead on two RBI singles in the top of the third as they held a 3-1 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer came back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth after freshman Jeremiah Quezada singled to right field to bring in freshman Nolan McCafferty and Hinthorne also singled to right to bring in Omori to tie the game at 3-3.

The Sagehens scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Jordan singled through the left side of the infield to bring in Yoshihara to give the Sagehens a one run advantage late against the Beavers.

With two outs in the ninth, the Beavers brought the tying run to third base with a chance to tie the game. The Beavers were able to tie the game after Burleson singled to left field to tie the game at 3-3.

Caltech then took over the lead in the top of the 10th as Levine hit a go-ahead home run to left field to give Caltech a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the tenth.

With their backs against the wall, the Sagehens came back in the bottom of the 10th and loaded the bases with one out in the inning and sophomore Duncan Skerrett to the plate. Skerrett, in his first at-bat of the afternoon, lined a single up the middle to bring home Nishioka and Hulse as the Sagehens walked off at home in game one against Caltech.

 Game Two:

The Sagehens were led by Nishioka who went 4-5 with three RBI and three runs scored in the win. Jordan, Rogan, Hulse and Simsiman all tallied three hits each in the win as well.

The Beavers were led by Nurleson who went 2-3 in the loss.

After surviving a scare in the first game of the double header, the Sagehens were not going to let themselves get into another close battle with Caltech as they plated five runners in their first at-bats. Rogan led things off with a two-run homer to right center to get the Sagehens off to a 2-0 lead early. Pomona-Pitzer added three more with RBI's coming from Omori, junior Rob Simsiman and Jordan to extend the lead to 5-0 after the first.

Caltech answered with an RBI in the top of the second but the Sagehens threw a crooked number on the scoreboard for the second-straight inning as they scored three in the bottom of the second after a solo shot by Nishioka and RBI's from Simsiman to extend the lead to 8-1.

The Beavers came back to cut the lead down to 8-5 after they put a four spot on the board in the top of the fourth but the Sagehens responded with three in the bottom half of the inning with RBI's Rogan and McCafferty to take an 11-5 lead heading into the fifth.

Caltech added one more to their total in the top of the sixth but the Sagehens closed the day out with two runs in the sixth from Skerrett and three in the seventh from RBI doubles from Nishioka and Hulse as the Sagehens run ruled the Beavers in game two.

Up Next: The Sagehens will continue SCIAC play as they next host SCIAC rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, April 7th at 3:00 p.m.
