CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 1 seed Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team fell in the SCIAC Tournament Final to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 7-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
The Sagehens and Athenas are the 2016 Co-Champions of the SCIAC as both teams have a point total of eight points combined with regular season and SCIAC Tournament play.
The Sagehens dug themselves a hole early against the Athenas as they dropped all three of the singles matches to start the day. Pomona-Pitzer dropped the No. 1 doubles by the score of 8-4, lost No. 2 doubles 8-3 and lost the No. 3 doubles 8-3 as well.
The Sagehens battled in the singles competition but ended up dropping four of the six matches to CMS. Senior Lea Lynn Yen took the first win of the day in the No. 5 singles as she defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-0.
The final win of the day for Pomona-Pitzer came in the No. 1 singles match as freshman Caroline Casper defeated senior Caroline Ward 6-7, 6-2, 10-2.
"I want to congratulate the CMS Women's tennis team for a well-played match", said Head Coach Ann Lebedeff. "Their doubles teams played flawless tennis to take a 3-0 lead. However, I felt we fought hard in the singles with good performances by Caroline Casper at #1 and Lea Lynn Yen at #5. Close three set loses at #3 Shivani Doraiswami and #6 Arianna Chen were tough. We hope to have a rematch next weekend in the NCAA west regional."
The Sagehens finish in second place at the SCIAC Tournament and will wait and see if they will qualify as an at-large team in the NCAA Regionals.
