CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 3 ranked Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team started out the first round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships with a 9-0 win over Occidental on Friday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
The Sagehens started out the day with a 3-0 lead as they swept the doubles competition. The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Maryann Zhao and sophomore Emily Chen swept their match 8-0.
Senior Lea Lynn Yen and freshman Caroline Casper also swept their match in the No. 2 spot 8-0 and sophomore Grace Hruska and senior Marie Fleming defeated their opponents by the score of 8-1 in the No. 3 doubles match.
The Sagehens also went on to win all six of the singles matches as well. Zhao took the first singles match of the day in the No. 2 spot by the score of 6-0, 6-0.
Senior Mae Coyiuto finished off her opponent in the No. 4 spot 6-0, 6-0 and freshman Arianna Chen also won her singles match 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot.
Casper went on to win the No. 1 singles match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory and sophomore Shivani Doraiswami won her match in the No. 3 spot by the score of 6-1, 6-1.
The Sagehens ended the day as Yen won the final singles match of the afternoon as she defeated her opponent by the score of 6-1, 6-2.
The Sagehens will continue the SCIAC Championships tomorrow at the Pauley Tennis Complex as they play the winner of No. 5 La Verne and No. 4 Cal Lutheran at 11:00 a.m.
