CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team upset No. 3 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-4 on Friday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
The Pomona-Pitzer win over CMS was the first time the women's team defeated the Athenas in five years.
The Sagehens started out with a 2-1 deficit as they lost two of the three doubles matches to start the day.
The lone win for the Sagehens in the doubles competition came in the No. 1 doubles match as the team of sophomore Maryann Zhao and sophomore Emily Chen defeated their opponents 8-5.
Pomona-Pitzer went on to take four of the six singles matches against the Athenas. The first of which came as senior Lea Lynn Yen took a win in the No. 6 singles match by the score of 6-2, 6-2.
Sophomore Shivani Doraiswami took the next win for the Sagehens in the No. 4 singles match as she defeated her opponent 7-6, 6-2.
Freshman Caroline Casper won the No. 1 singles match with a win in the third set by the score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and Zhao clinched the win for Pomona-Pitzer in the No. 3 singles match with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
"Great comeback win for the Hens. Solid singles performance from everyone on the team", said Head Coach Ann Lebedeff. "Congrats to the No. 1 doubles team of Emily Chen and Maryann Zhao beating the No. 1 regional team of Ward and Kuosman and Caroline Casper beating No. 1 regional singles player Caroline Ward."
The Sagehens next take the court as they travel to SCIAC opponent Chapman on Saturday, April 2nd at 2:00 p.m.
