CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 1 ranked Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team defeated No. 4 Amherst 6-3 on Monday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
This was the third straight team ranked inside the top-20 that the Sagehens have defeated coming off of their ITA Indoor National Championship win. This is also the first time Pomona-Pitzer defeated Amherst in over 18 years.
The Sagehens started out with a 2-1 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches.
Pomona-Pitzer got its first win with the team of Lea Lynn Yen and Caroline Casper taking the No. 2 doubles match 8-1. Maryann Zhao and Emily Chen capped off the doubles matches with a win in the No. 1 doubles with an 8-4 victory.
Casper started off the singles matches getting a win in the No. 2 singles match as she took care of her opponent 6-3, 6-1. Zhao followed that up with a 6-4, 6-0 win in the No. 3 singles.
The Sagehens clinched the win over Amherst as Mae Coyiuto took a 6-4, 6-2 win in her match for the No. 4 singles spot.
Marie Fleming ended the day with a win in the No. 6 singles match as she defeated her opponent 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
Pomona-Pitzer will try to extend its win streak over top-ranked opponents as they take on No. 8 ranked Bowdoin College on Tuesday, March 15th at 2:00 p.m. at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
