CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 1 ranked Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team defeated No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
The Sagehens jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as they took all three of the doubles matches against Washington.
Maryann Zhao and Emily Chen started out with a win in the No. 1 doubles match by the score of 8-3 and Lea Lynn Yen and Caroline Casper also took their match 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles match. Joy Kim and Arianna Chen had a battle in the No. 3 doubles match but came out on top with a 9-8 win.
The Sagehens went on to win five of the six singles matches with Casper starting out with a win in the No. 2 singles spot by the score of 6-1, 6-4.
Zhao defeated her opponent 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles match and Mae Coyiuto won her match in the No. 4 singles spot by the score of 6-2, 6-3.
Pomona-Pitzer ended the day as Emily Chen won the No. 6 singles match 6-2, 6-3 and Arianna Chen came back to win the No. 5 singles match in a tiebreaker by the score of 6-7, 6-2, 10-7.
The Sagehens next take the court as they host non-conference opponent Amherst on Monday, March 14th at 10:00 a.m.
