Women's Tennis: Sagehens Advance To ITA National Indoor Championship With 7-2 Win Over Sewanee

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The No. 7 ranked Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team advanced to the ITA Indoor National Championship after their 7-2 win over Sewanee in the Semi-Finals on Saturday, February 27th in Greencastle, Indiana.

This is the first time in the Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis history that the team has made it to the ITA Indoor championship match. With a win in the finals, Pomona-Pitzer will take over the No. 1 overall ranking in Division III.

The Sagehens started off the day with a 2-1 lead after taking two of the three doubles matches. Lea Lynn Yen and Caroline Casper took their match in the No. 2 doubles spot by the score of 8-3. Joy Kim and Arianna Chen followed that up with a win in the No. 3 doubles by the score of 8-5.

Pomona-Pitzer also dominated the singles competition as they won five of the six matches.

The Sagehens saw their first win in the No. 3 singles match as Maryann Zhao defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-1. Casper went on to take her singles match as well as she won in the No. 2 singles spot with a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

The next win for the Sagehens came in the No. 4 singles as Shivani Doraiswami made quick work of her opponent with a 6-1, 6-2 win.

The Sagehens got their fourth win in the singles competition as Mae Coyiuto took a win in the No. 5 spot with a 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (5) win.

Pomona-Pitzer took its final win of the day as Chen took her singles match in the No. 6 spot with a 6-2, 6-1 win.   

"This was a great match and effort by Hen tennis", said head coach Ann Lebedeff. "This team had a great individual effort by each player to defeat a hardworking and spunky Sewanee team."

The Sagehens will take on Carnegie Mellon in the ITA Indoor National Finals. The Tartans have advanced to the championship match for the fifth straight year and the sixth time in eight years of the tournament. The championship match will take place on Sunday at 8:45 a.m. ET.
