Claremont, Calif. - Freshmen Shivani Doraiswami and Emily Chen (pictured) earned singles wins for No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer, but the No. 4 CMS Women's Tennis team took momentum with a 2-1 lead after doubles and earned a 6-3 win over the Sagehens on Friday afternoon at the Biszantz Tennis Center.
The loss drops the Sagehens to 11-5 on the season, with all five loss coming to teams ranked in the top 10 nationally, and 6-1 in the SCIAC. CMS improves to 16-1 and 5-0 in conference play with the win.
Freshman Maryann Zhao and sophomore Maddie Gordon provided the one win for the Sagehens in doubles, earning an 8-4 win at No. 3, while the Athenas won 8-3 at both No. 1 and No. 2. Chen had a quick 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles, while CMS won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 4 for a 4-2 lead, while the other three courts went to three sets.
The Athenas earned the clinch, though, as Sarah Kukino earned a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Zhao for a 5-2 lead. Doraiswami earned a big personal singles win at No. 2, prevailing 10-8 in a first-set tiebreaker, falling 6-4 in the second set, and then winning the abbreviated third set 10-5 over Katie Kuosman.
Pomona-Pitzer plays its final regular season dual match tomorrow at La Verne (held at the Claremont Club) beginning at 2 p.m.
