Claremont, Calif. - The No. 7 ranked Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team improved to 4-0 in the SCIAC with a convincing 9-0 win over Whittier on Friday afternoon at Pauley Tennis Complex.
With the win, Pomona-Pitzer moves to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in the SCIAC, with the four wins coming by a combined 34-2 score. Whittier slips to 4-12 overall and 2-1 in the SCIAC with the loss.
Freshman Shivani Doraiswami (pictured) played her first match at No. 1 singles and proved more than up to the challenge, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Meagan Zamilpa, who is ranked No. 9 in the West Region (Doraiswami is ranked No. 12).
Collectively, the Sagehens won their six singles matches by a combined 72-11, as freshmen Maryann Zhao and Grace Hruska won by identical scores of 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 and No. 3. Freshman Emily Kuo won 6-1, 6-0 and has now outscored her opponents 72-13 in her last 12 sets, spanning six matches. Freshman Emily Chen also won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.
Doubles were slightly closer, as the Sagehens earned 8-4 wins at No. 1 (Doraiswami/Chen) and No. 3 (Kuo/Marie Fleming) and an 8-2 win at No. 2 (Zhao/Maddie Gordon).
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action tomorrow for a big match against No. 9 Middlebury, beginning at 10 a.m.
