Six-Run Sixth Leads Sagehens Past Bates

Box Score

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 7-3 lead and went on to capture a 9-6 win over Bates in a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The win was the fifth in a row for the Sagehens (6-2), who used eight different pitchers on the day. Bates, which opened the season with wins over Caltech and CMS, falls to 2-1 with the loss.

After Mark Okuma gave Pomona-Pitzer a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single, Bates scored three times with two outs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. The score held until the sixth, when the Sagehens loaded the bases with one out. Sophomore catcher Kevin Jordan then tied the score when he lined a single into the left-center field gap to score a pair of runs.

Sophomore center fielder Tanner Nishioka then hustled down the line to prevent Bates from turning an inning-ending double-play, allowing the go-ahead run to score from third. After he stole second (one of his three stolen bases on the day), senior shortstop Sam Fox doubled him home to make the score 5-3. Junior first baseman Simon Rosenbaum then followed with a home run to left-center field to push the lead up to 7-3.

Freshman Nicholas Radich then set the side down in order with two strikeouts after taking over for freshman Bryan Lynch, who earned his first collegiate win after working the sixth. Lynch struck out the final two batters in the sixth to keep the score 3-1 with runners on second and third. Sophomore David Gerics allowed a leadoff double in the eighth, but kept the runner stranded on third and left Bates on three runs, as the Sagehens added insurance runs in the seventh (on an RBI single from Nishioka) and eighth (on an RBI double from E.J. Lopez) to go ahead 9-3.

Bates scored three times in the top of the ninth to make things interesting and had the tying run on deck, but Rosenbaum got the final out of the game with a strikeout looking to give the Sagehens the 9-6 win.

Freshman Peyton Holm started for Pomona-Pitzer and went two innings, allowing one hit. Freshman Nick Olmanson and sophomore Casey Hershfield also worked scoreless innings, while all eight pitchers who threw recorded at least one strikeout (with Radich and Lynch recording two). Okuma was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI and Lopez was 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Sagehens. Samuel Warren was 4-for-5 with two RBI for Bates.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action this weekend for a three-game series with Redlands, playing a Friday game on the road and then hosting the Bulldogs for an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
