Los Angeles, Calif. - Behind a late final-quarter goal from senior Neil Forsythe (pictured), the #16 Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo team upset #14 San Jose State, 8-7, in the fourth and final game of the two-day SoCal Tournament on Sunday at Loyola Marymount.
Earlier on Sunday, the Sagehens fell to host Loyola Marymount, 11-8, and the loss followed two Saturday losses at Pepperdine on Day 1 of the tournament. After the weekend, Pomona-Pitzer stands at 7-10 overall heading into conference play. The Sagehens travel to Occidental this coming Saturday at 11:00am to open the SCIAC loop.
In the see-saw game against San Jose State, Pomona-Pitzer led, 2-1, after the first quarter, but San Jose held the Sagehens scoreless in the second to lead, 4-2, at halftime. San Jose State continued to lead, 6-5, after three, but Pomona-Pitzer came alive in the final stanza, outscoring San Jose State 3-1 to take the one-goal victory.
In the fourth period, with San Jose State leading, 7-6, Timmy Hardman scored the equalizer with 2:38 remaining, and then Forsythe hit the game-winner with 1:53 left. Phillip Clayman led Hen scorers with 3 goals, while Forsythe and Adam Ward each scored 2, and Hardman 1. Daniel Diemer had 9 saves in goal.
In the morning game against Loyola Marymount, the host school ran out to 1-0 first quarter and 4-2 halftime leads. Pomona-Pitzer closed the gap to trail by one, 7-6, after three quarters, but LMU outscored Pomona-Pitzer, 5-2, in the final stanza for the win. Hardman scored 3 goals, while Ward, Max Ries, Tommy Turner, James Baker and Clayman each scored 1. Goalie Diemer saved 11 shots.
