Men's Water Polo Drops Close Contests with UCSB, UCI

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo dropped a pair of close contests to Division I opponents UC Santa Barbara,14-12, and UC Irvine, 12-8, Saturday at the IE Classic on the campus of CMS. 

Sagehens 12, UCSB 14

The Gauchos got out to an early 2-0 lead before scores from Jaden Winters and Indigo Lee tied things up. A Zach Whitfield goal later tied the game at 3-3, but UCSB scored four straight to take a 7-3 advantage into halftime. 

Winters opened the second half scoring before another pair of Gaucho goals put them up 9-4. Michael Soybel and Jake Lee each scored in the third, as Pomona-Pitzer trailed 12-6 heading into the fourth. 

Max Distaso, Soybel and Indigo Lee each found the back of the net in the fourth, as the Sagehens cut their deficit to 13-9 with 2:26 remaining. UCSB then scored before Indigo Lee again found the back of the net. Indigo Lee, Tiernan Braun and Tucker Gavin each posted goals in the final 1:32, but UCSB came away with the 14-12 win. 

Sagehens 8, UCI 12

The Aneaters scored the game's first two goals before Jake Lee fired a shot home. UCI scored the next two, then Miles Chiang and Jake Lee traded goals to bring Pomona-Pitzer within one, 4-3. Teams traded goals as Indigo Lee scored late in the second period, bringing the score to 5-4 for UCI at halftime. 

Alden Pfau and Winters both scored in the third, but the Anteaters held on to a 8-6 advantage heading into the fourth. UCI scored the first three of the fourth, going up 11-6. Whitfield and Soybel each scored in the final minutes but the Anteaters came away with the 12-8 win. 

Up Next: The Sagehens will take on Cal State Fullerton and Concordia Irvine in the Fullerton Tournament next Friday. Sept. 11, in Fullerton.
