CMS Defeats Shorthanded Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - Mae Coyiuto won a 6-1, 7-5 decision at No. 2 singles, but that was the only point Pomona-Pitzer could muster as it fell 8-1 to No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday.

With the loss, the sixth-ranked Sagehens fall to 11-5 on the year, with four of the losses coming to teams in the top five (Johns Hopkins, Williams, Amherst, CMS), as well as 4-1 in the SCIAC. CMS improves to 13-7 and 5-0 in conference play.

The Sagehens were without Lea Lynn Yen, who usually plays No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles, and then were forced to pull Marie Fleming from No. 4 singles after she aggravated an injury during doubles (forcing her to serve underhand on her final two service games). Pomona-Pitzer was swept in doubles, falling 8-4 at No. 1 and 8-2 at No. 3, with Sammy Chao and Maddie Gordon putting up a strong fight at No. 2 in their first match together before coming up short 8-6.

Singles saw the Athenas take the first sets at every court except Coyiuto's. Crystal Lim took a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 5 and Katie Kuosman won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 to clinch the team win. Caroline Ward, Sarah Kukino and Yvonne Likomanova won at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6, respectively for the Athenas.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Friday when it hosts No. 15 La Verne for a 2 p.m. contest.
