Greencastle, Ind. - Senior Arthi Padmanabhan (pictured) and sophomore Mae Coyiuto won at both singles and doubles, but No. 8 University of Chicago earned a 6-3 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday in the third-place match at the ITA Indoor Nationals, hosted by DePauw.
With the loss, the Sagehens slip to 2-2 on the year with both losses coming to top 10 programs at the ITA Indoors this weekend (including a 6-3 loss to No. 7 Johns Hopkins on Saturday). Chicago improves to 5-2 overall with the win.
Coyiuto and Padmanabhan took an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles, but the Maroons won the other two lines, including a tight 8-6 decision at No. 1. After Megan Tang earned a win at No. 1 singles to push the lead to 3-1, Coyiuto finished off a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 in order to cut the lead to 3-2.
Chicago took a three-set win at No. 3, and Padmanbahan kept the Sagehens in it with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 to make the overall score 4-3, but the Maroons captured wins at the final two lines, with Ramaswami Sruthi earning the clinching point at No. 5 with a two-set win.
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Friday when it hosts Mary Washington for a 2:30 p.m. contest at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
