Redlands, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team dropped a pair of matches at the Inland Empire Tournament on Sunday, falling to No. 18 Redlands 15-10 and No. 9 UC Irvine 25-7.
With the losses, the Sagehens fall to 0-6 on the season, with all six losses coming to teams in the top 20 in the nation, including five in the top ten. Pomona-Pitzer has already played No. 1 USC, No. 2 UCLA, No. 6 UC Santa Barbara, No. 9 UC Irvine and No. 10 UC San Diego.
Redlands moved into the national rankings last week after a win over No. 12 Air Force, and took a 9-6 lead on Pomona-Pitzer at the half. The Sagehens got back to within 9-8 early in the third quarter on goals from seniors Ryan Higgins and Jarrod Gaut, but Redlands scored the next five goals to put the game away.
A day after scoring four goals against No. 1 USC, freshman James Baker led the Sagehens again with three goals against Redlands. Clayton Hardman added two goals, while five others had one apiece, including Gaut, Higgins, senior Dylan O'Connell, freshman Tommy Tuner and sophomore Neil Forsythe. Clint Freeman and Michael Robinson had five goals apiece for Redlands.
In the nightcap, UC Irvine was led by Bojan Hrlec with seven goals in a 25-7 win. Freshman Timmy Hardman (pictured) scored twice for the Sagehens, his first two collegiate goals, matching junior Stephen Vint, while O'Connell, Higgins and junior Travis Larsen had a goal apiece.
Pomona-Pitzer returns to action next weekend at the Cal Baptist Invitational.
