Pomona-Pitzer Earns Split, Gets Series Win With Occidental

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Los Angeles, Calif. - Sophomore first baseman Jake Bruml (San Mateo, Calif.) hit a two-run homer in the first to provide all of the offense, and seniors Stuart Gano (Lakewood, Wash.) and Collin Majev (Baltimore, Md. - pictured) held Occidental to just one run, as Pomona-Pitzer won the first of two 2-1 on Saturday.

Occidental bounced back to win the nightcap 14-4 in eight innings to salvage the final game of the three-game series with Pomona-Pitzer, which also won 2-1 on Friday. With the split, the Sagehens are now 24-11 on the season and 17-7 in the SCIAC, heading into the round-robin phase of the regular season schedule. Occidental improves to 23-12 overall and 14-10 in the SCIAC.

Bruml hit a two-run homer in the first inning to score senior right fielder Nick Gentili (Glendale, Calif.), who was 3-for-4, accounting for three of Pomona-Pitzer's five hits.

Occidental closed to within 2-1 in the bottom of the third with a run of Gano, who went five innings, allowing five hits to get the win. Majev then came on for a four-inning save, allowing four hits to close out the win.

The Tigers were able to get two singles with one out in the bottom of the ninth, and then drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Majev got Scott Hong to ground out to shortstop to end it.

In the nightcap, Bruml was 3-for-3 with a homer and three RBI, but Occidental was able to break the game open with a six-run third inning to take an 8-0 lead and the Sagehens were unable to threaten the rest of the way.

Pomona-Pitzer still took two of three to win the three-game conference series with every team in the league except first-place Cal Lutheran. With only seven league losses, Pomona-Pitzer needs to win only one of its four games in the round-robin format to clinch a berth in the SCIAC Tournament, which will be held at the highest seed on May 3-5. The top four teams qualify, and the two teams tied for fifth (La Verne and Chapman) both have 11 losses, four games behind the Sagehens with four to play.
