Rosenbaum Moves To 5-0 As Sagehens Split With Chapman

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Claremont, Calif. - Senior Mike Moyer (Oakland, Calif. - pictured) and sophomore first baseman Jake Bruml (San Mateo, Calif.) each had two RBI and Simon Rosenbaum moved to 5-0 on the year on the mound as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team salvaged a split with Chapman on Saturday with a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

Chapman overcame an early 3-0 deficit to win 6-5 in the opener. With the split, Pomona-Pitzer moves to 15-5 on the year and 10-5 in the SCIAC. Chapman moves to 11-10 overall and 9-6 in league play.

In the nightcap, Bruml had the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie, lining a single through the left side to score shortstop Sam Fox (New York, N.Y.), who started the inning with a single and moved to second on a Moyer sacrifice. Moyer tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on a bases-loaded RBI single.

Freshman Kevin Kannappan (Palo Alto, Calif.) worked a scoreless eighth, and junior Robert Weller (Irvine, Calif.) threw the ninth inning to get his fifth save. Sophomore third baseman E.J. Lopez (Fresno, Calif.) finished off the game with a great defensive play, diving into the 5-6 hole to rob Matt Gandy, who was 2-for-2 with two walks in the game prior to the at-bat.

Rosenbaum threw seven innings, allowing seven hits and striking out three to remain perfect in his collegiate career. Fox was the only player with a multi-hit game for the Sagehens, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

In the opener, Rosenbaum and Munzer had RBI singles in the first inning and Lopez had a sacrifice fly to stake the Sagehens to an early 3-0 lead. Chapman, though, came back to tie it 3-3 in the fifth on a Jeff Ortega RBI single, and then took a 5-4 lead in the sixth on RBI singles from Mark Saatzer and Gandy.

Rosenbaum tied it in the sixth with a deep fly ball to center for a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded, but reliever Andrew Carbajal got out of the jam with no further damage. Gandy then had a sacrifice fly in the eighth to bring home the winning run after the Sagehens had two errors in the inning to set the table.

Munzer was 3-for-4 in the opening game with a run scored and an RBI, while Saatzer was 3-for-5 for Chapman. Weller took the tough luck loss on the mound on an unearned run in the eighth without allowing hit, while Carbajal got the win for Chapman.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend when it travels to play in the Tucson Invitational Games, facing Macalater, Buena Vista and Gustavus Adolphus on Friday and Saturday.
