Redlands Rallies To Defeat Sagehens

Box Score

Redlands, Calif. - The Redlands Baseball team used a six-run eighth inning to complete a comeback from a 9-1 deficit and capture a 13-9 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Friday afternoon.

With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 8-3 on the year and 4-3 in SCIAC play, while Redlands moves to 6-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

A grand slam from freshman third baseman Simon Rosenbaum (Los Altos Hills, Calif. - pictured) gave the Sagehens a 7-0 lead in the second after Redlands committed four early errors to help Pomona-Pitzer get off to a 3-0 lead.

Redlands got one of the runs back in the bottom of the second, but senior right fielder Nick Gentili (Glendale, Calif.) added a two-run double in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 9-1.

However, Redlands scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth off of sophomore starter Jake Bruml (San Mateo, Calif.) to pull within 9-4 and force the Sagehens to go to the bullpen to start the seventh. The Bulldogs then tacked on three in the seventh to close to 9-7, and loaded the bases in the eighth on two infield singles and a walk.

Pomona-Pitzer then brought in junior Robert Weller (Irvine, Calif.), who was 4-for-4 in save opportunites on the year, but Mark Tumlinson hit a bases-clearing triple to give Redlands its first lead at 10-9. Jordan Dresner followed with another triple to make the score 11-9 and the Bulldogs went on to tack on two more runs in the inning to take a 13-9 lead.

With two outs in the ninth, senior center fielder Erik Munzer (Beverly Hills, Calif.) singled for his fourth hit of the game, and an error and a walk loaded the bases to bring the tying run to the plate, but John Keane got Bruml to pop up to end the game.

Rosenbaum finished the day 3-for-5 with four RBI on his grand slam, Munzer was 4-for-5 with two runs scored, and Gentili was 1-for-4 with three RBI. Sean McMillan was 4-for-5 with four RBI for Redlands.

The two teams will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow, beginning at 11 a.m.
