Sagehens Split Doubleheader At Redlands

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Redlands, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team used a seven-run fourth inning to take a 10-6 win over Redlands in the first game, but Redlands bounced back with an 8-3 win in the nightcap on Saturday.

With the split, the Sagehens move to 16-11-1 on the year, including 10-8 in the SCIAC. Redlands moves to 14-13 overall and 8-10 in the SCIAC.

Junior center fielder Erik Munzer (Beverly Hills, Calif.) had a two-run double in the seven-run fourth, while freshman right fielder Isaac Richard III (Oakland, Calif.) added a two-run single. Freshman pitcher/designated hitter Jake Bruml (San Mateo, Calif. - pictured) added a sacrifice fly for one of his three RBI on the day.

Bruml had an RBI single in the third inning to give the Sagehens the lead for good at 2-1, and then added an RBI double in the eighth inning to push the lead up to 10-6 after Redlands got back within 9-6 with five unanswered runs.

Junior first baseman Nick Gentili (Glendale, Calif.) was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI for the Sagehens. Junior reliever Guy Stevens (Lafayette, Calif.) allowed only two hits over the final 3.1 innings to get the save, his second straight strong relief outing after he threw four innings to get the win in a 3-2 10-inning victory over Chapman last weekend.

In the nightcap, Richard doubled in the second and came around to score the first run of the game, but Redlands pulled ahead for good with a three-run fifth to take a 4-1 lead. After the Bulldogs went ahead 5-1, the Sagehens got two runs in the top of the eighth on single from Bruml, an RBI double from sophomore catcher Travis Bowers (Palo Alto, Calif.) and an RBI single from freshman second baseman Mark Okuma (Palos Verdes, Calif.).

Redlands reliever Brock Jacobo got out of further damage with a double play, and Redlands took advantage of three Pomona-Pitzer errors to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take control and win 8-3.

Freshman shortstop Sam Fox (New York, N.Y.) was the only Sagehen with more than one hit in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with a triple.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend with a three-game series against neighboring rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
