Claremont, Calif. – Junior Ryan Higgins (pictured - photo by Becky Gaut) broke a 7-7 tie with 5:13 to play and the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team held on for a 10-8 win over No. 19 Cal Baptist on Friday afternoon at the Gary Troyer Tournament.
Pomona-Pitzer also added a 14-10 win over Harvard on Friday evening to win their third straight game and improve to 3-11 on the year. The Sagehens had started out 0-11 against 11 teams ranked in the top 20 in the nation, while the win over Cal Baptist gave the team their first win over a ranked team this year.
After Higgins broke the tie, Jason Cox scored with 1:31 to stretch the lead to 9-7. Cal Baptist scored 11 seconds later to pull within 9-8, but senior Cody Moore scored a man-up goal with 42 seconds left to seal it.
Cox finished with a team high three goals against Cal Baptist and added two more in the win over Harvard, as the Sagehens led almost wire to wire, other than a brief 1-1 tie. Pomona-Pitzer used a 4-1 run in the third quarter to turn a 6-5 lead into a 10-5 advantage against the Crimson, behind two goals from sophomore Stephen Vint.
The Crimson got as close as 11-9 in the fourth on back-to-back goals from Noah Harrison, but Moore stopped the run with 5:26 left, and junior Dylan O'Connell added another to make it 13-9 with 3:59 to play.
Vint finished with a team high three goals against the Crimson, while five other players had two goals, including Cox, Moore, O'Connell, Phillip Clayman, and Jarrod Gaut.
Junior goalie Tyler Hill had 12 saves against Cal Baptist, and Austin Strong had eight against Harvard.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow against Johns Hopkins and Fordham on the second day of the Gary Troyer Tournament.
