CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's volleyball defeated Carleton College in four sets (25-21, 25-17, 20-25, 25-20) before falling to Southwestern University in three 23-25, 13-25, 20-25) Friday at the Pacific Coast Classic.
Season Impact: The results put the Sagehens at 1-2 on the season.
Corrina Benson set the new program record for career service aces with 129, tallying three versus Carleton and one against Southwestern.
Sagehens 3, Carleton 1
Kayla Thienprasiddhi posted a match-high 17 kills on a .244 clip versus the Knights to go with five digs.
Ella Mesard followed with 16 kills while
Paige Butler dished out 43 assists and had 14 digs. Benson notched 22 digs and three aces while
Lexi Seres contributed 17 digs.
Leading 19-17 in set one, Butler set up Mesard for a kill to put Pomona-Pitzer up three. The Knights scored the next two before
Makayla Sheffer put one down. Theinprasiddhi sealed the Sagehens' 25-21 set one win with a kill. Pomona-Pitzer went up 2-0 in the match after a convincing 25-17 set two win. Sheffer and
CC Porter tallied a block to give the Sagehens a 19-10 lead late. Sheffer later sealed the set win with another kill.
Carleton answered in set three, leading for most of the set and going on to win 25-20. But the Sagehens answered in the fourth. With the set tied at 16, Pomona-Pitzer rattled off five straight points to take control, including kills from Mesard and Porter and a block from the two. Porter tallied another kill before a Knight attack error gave the Sagehens the 25-20 set four win and the 3-1 match victory.

Thienprasiddhi again led the team with 13 kills versus the Pirates, while Mesard followed with seven.
Matsa Shi contributed 15 digs while
Sophie Mies posted 15 assists and Butler had 14.
With set one tied at 19, Thienprasiddhi powered back-to-back kills to put the Sagehens up two. But Southwestern responded with four straight to go up 23-21. Porter notched a kill and a late Pirate attack error brought Pomona-Pitzer within a point, 24-23. But the Pirates sealed set one with a kill. Southwestern then took set two, closing it with a 4-0 run to go up 2-0 in the match.
Set three remained close throughout, with a Thienprasiddhi kill and Benson's record-breaking ace giving the Sagehens a 13-12 lead. Kills from
Greta Klinkmann and
Anna Krebs later fueled a 3-0 Pomona-Pitzer run to take a 17-16 lead. But Southwestern scored eight of the following nine points to take control, 24-18. The Pirates would go on to win 25-20, sealing the straight set win.
