CLAREMONT, Calif. — For the first time since 2013, Pomona-Pitzer volleyball defeated CMS in straight sets (25-19, 25-21, 27-25) Tuesday night at Voelkel Gym.
Season Impact: The win puts the Sagehens at 7-8 on the season, including 1-2 in SCIAC play.
Kayla Thienprasiddhi led all hitters with 15 kills on a .270 clip, also adding eight digs and a pair of blocks.
Samantha Grabb contributed nine kills while
Anna Krebs had seven and
Ella Mesard six.
CC Porter tallied six blocks to go with five kills.
Paige Butler dished out 22 assists and 13 digs.
Pomona-Pitzer cruised to a 25-19 victory in set one, with kills from Mesard and Krebs giving the Sagehens an 18-12 lead midway through. The Athenas fought their way within a point, 19-18, before Pomona-Pitzer scored six of the last seven to take the set. Butler sealed the set win with a kill.
Set two remained close throughout, with back-to-back kills from Mesard putting the Sagehens up 20-18. A
Matsa Shi ace and a Grabb kill highlighted a 3-0 Pomona-Pitzer run, before Thienprasiddhi brought the game to set point with a kill. Grabb finished off the second set, 25-21, with a kill.
A back and forth set three saw nine lead changes. A
Sophie Mies setter dump gave the Sagehens a 20-19 advantage, but CMS scored the next two to go up 21-20. Mesard and Grabb recorded kills before an Athenas kill put them up, 23-22. Thienprasiddhi then powered a kill and a CMS attack error gave the Sagehens the lead, 24-23.
Teams then traded points, with a kill from Porter and a CMS service error bringing the score to 26-25 for Pomona-Pitzer. Shi finished things off with a kill, giving the Sagehens their first sweep over CMS since 2013 and first win over the Athenas since 2024.
