CLAREMONT, CA. – The Sagehens played to a 1-1 draw against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday night in the Sixth Street Rivalry.
Season Impact: With the tie, the Sagehens are 4-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer came out attacking early, with Kieran Veloria forcing a save in the seventh minute before Charles Leonard opened the scoring moments later. Leonard found the back of the net early in the eighth minute, with assists from Aidan MacLennan and Nicolas Bee, to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead. The physical play continued throughout the opening half, with CMS receiving two yellow cards as both teams battled for possession. The Sagehens continued to create chances, with MacLennan forcing multiple saves from CMS goalkeeper. Gavin Honey also came up with several saves to keep the Stags off the scoreboard as Pomona-Pitzer carried its 1-0 lead into halftime.
CMS equalized just 42 seconds into the second half, making it a 1-1 match. Just minutes later, CMS was reduced to 10 players when Bo Gardner received his second yellow card of the match in the 51st minute, resulting in a red card. The Sagehens played with a one-player advantage for the remainder of the match. Pomona-Pitzer continued to pressure after the equalizer, with Ryo Kasai, MacLennan and Townes Richardson all creating chances. The physicality continued throughout the second half, with CMS finishing with four yellow cards and Pomona-Pitzer receiving two. Honey made a key save in the 78th minute on a shot from James Gomez, while MacLennan recorded two late chances in the final five minutes. Despite playing with a man advantage for the final 40 minutes, the Sagehens were unable to find the go-ahead goal as the Sixth Street Rivalry ended in a 1-1 draw.
