THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's volleyball fell to UC Santa Cruz and Schreiner University Friday at the Cal Lutheran Invite.
Season Impact: The results put the Sagehens at 6-5 on the season.
Sagehens 1, UCSC 3
Kayla Thienprasiddhi led Pomona-Pitzer on offense with 12 kills, while
Charlotte Sekerka added eight kills on a .429 clip to go with four blocks.
CC Porter notched four kills and a pair of blocks while
Ella Mesard had three kills against the Banana Slugs.
The Sagehens led in set one, 14-12, after a kill from Sekerka. But UCSC scored the next 10 to go up 22-14 before Sekerka notched another kill. Porter added a kill late but the Banana Slugs took the opening set, 25-16. Pomona-Pitzer again led 14-12 in set two before the Banana Slugs used a 11-1 run to go up 23-15.
Sophia Scholz notched a kill late but UCSC took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-16 set two win.
In set three, teams traded points as a Porter kill put the Sagehens up 16-12. A block from Sekerka and
Alex Besteman later gave Pomona-Pitzer a 23-19 advantage. UCSC scored four straight to tie it at 23, but Porter sealed the 25-23 set three win with a kill and a solo block. The Banana Slugs then cruised in set four, winning 25-17, despite a late kill from Sekerka to take the match, 3-1.
Sagehens 0, Schreiner 3
Thienprasiddhi again led Pomona-Pitzer on offense with seven kills while Mesard followed with six on a .353 percentage.
Corrina Benson registered nine digs while
Sophia Kim dished out 13 assists.
The Sagehens got out to a quick 6-0 lead in set one, later leading 17-11 following a pair of Benson service aces and a Thienprasiddhi kill. Kills from Sekerka and Thienprasiddhi later pushed it to set point, 24-22. But Schreiner scored four in a row to take a 26-24 set one win. Teams traded points in set two, with a kill from Mesard tying the game at 15. Despite a late kill from Thienprasiddhi, Schreiner closed the game on a 5-1 run to take set two, 25-19.
Schreiner led throughout set three, with a Scholz kill bringing the Sagehens within five, 16-11. Besteman and
Matsa Shi registered kills late, but Schreiner eventually won set three 25-15 and the match, 3-0.
Up Next: The Sagehens will face Hardin-Simmons tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 19, at 3:00 p.m. PT to close the Cal Lutheran Invite.
