CLAREMONT, CA. – The Sagehens played to a 1-1 draw against Cal Lutheran in the SCIAC opener on Wednesday afternoon.
Season Impact: With the tie, the Sagehens start the season 2-1-1 and start the SCIAC play 0-0-1.
Pomona-Pitzer got on the board early, with Bailey Brooke finding the back of the net in the fourth minute to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead. Bailey continued to create chances throughout the opening half, recording four shots. Cal Lutheran answered in the 19th minute to level the match at 1-1. Patricia DePalma and the Sagehens' defense kept the Kingsmen from taking the lead, while Pomona-Pitzer continued to create opportunities of its own. Lucia Page Sander and Sabina Peterson Rajalingam each put shots on goal that were saved by Cal Lutheran goalkeeper. The teams entered halftime tied at 1-1, with both sides continuing to battle for control.
Pomona-Pitzer created several chances in the second half. Peterson Rajalingam recorded a shot just wide in the 48th minute, while Page Sander forced another save in the 61st minute. Peterson Rajalingam added another shot in the 70th minute. Cal Lutheran threatened late, but DePalma made a key save in the 75th minute to keep the match level. The Sagehens continued to push for a game-winner, with Lilah Pruner hitting the woodwork in the 89th minute. Neither team could find the deciding goal, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
