GRANVILLE, OH. – The Sagehens fell 1-0 to Denison on Saturday afternoon in a physical match that featured seven yellow cards between the two teams.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens start the season 3-2-0.
Pomona-Pitzer had an early chance in the eighth minute when Ryo Kasai fired a shot wide. Nate McGlinchey added another shot in the 14th minute, but the Sagehens were unable to find an early breakthrough. The physical play continued throughout the opening half, with both teams battling for possession. Denison broke through in the 18th minute to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead. Gavin Honey made three saves in the first half to keep Pomona-Pitzer within one.
The Sagehens continued to battle in the second half, with Aidan MacLennan recording a shot in the 51st minute and Aidan Lopez Davis adding another in the 62nd minute. Pomona-Pitzer created several chances late in the match. Khalab Blagburn, Gus Colvin and Blake Hartfelder each put shots on goal between the 71st and 78th minutes, but Denison goalkeeper turned each opportunity away.
The physicality remained through the final minutes, with three more yellow cards shown to the Sagehens late in the match. Pomona-Pitzer continued to push for an equalizer but could not find the back of the net before the final whistle. Denison held on for the 1-0 victory.
