Baseball Closes Regular Season with Sweep Over Occidental

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team secured a 3-0 series sweep over Occidental with a pair of wins over the Tigers Saturday at Alumni Field.
 
Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens secure the No. 2 seed in next week's SCIAC Tournament and finish the regular season at 28-12 overall and 17-7 in SCIAC play. 
 
Sagehens 9, Oxy 6
 
Kai Gonzaga, Peter Savas and Tanner DeGrazia each tallied two RBI to lead Pomona-Pitzer's offense in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Eli Della Bitta earned the win from the mound, going 3.0 innings in relief and posting three strikeouts.
 
The Sagehens scored the game's first four runs, all in the second inning, with Sammy Lee posting an RBI single to start the scoring. Gonzaga then drew a bases-loaded walk and Will Parker scored on a wild pitch. Savas then notched an RBI sac fly. The Tigers responded in the third with a pair of runs. 
 
Landon Hu added an RBI double in the third before the Sagehens scored four more in the sixth, making it 9-2. DeGrazia belted a two-run double to highlight the scoring in the frame. Occidental scored four runs in the eighth to hang around, making it 9-6. Talen Pilz came in and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the 9-6 Sagehen win. 
 
Sagehens 21, Oxy 0
 
Greg Pierantoni recorded eight RBI to lead the Sagehen bats in the final game of the regular season. Brody Ruyle added four while Cooper Berry and Peter Savas each had two. Wade Lawson earned the win from the mound, going 4.2 innings with three strikeouts. 
 
Pierantoni blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the first before Berry belted a two-run shot in the second. Pierantoni added a two-run single in the second as the Sagehens took an early 8-0 lead. Pomona-Pitzer added seven runs in the fourth, as Lee, Savas, Jack Gold, Pierantoni, Hu and Lateef Wakil notched RBI in the frame. 
 
Brody Ruyle posted a grand slam of his own in the sixth inning, giving Pomona-Pitzer a 21-0 lead. Devran Orens closed the game out from the mound with a pair of strikeouts as the Sagehens came away with the seven-inning run-rule victory. 
 
Up Next: Pomona-Pitzer will host No. 3 seed Redlands to open the SCIAC Tournament on Thursday, May 7.
