CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer lacrosse came from behind to defeat CMS 14-13 in dramatic fashion Sunday in the NCAA Tournament Second Round. The Sagehens will now take on Trinity in the Round of 16 on Saturday, May 16.
Taylor Glanville led Pomona-Pitzer with a team-high four goals on five shots, including the game-winning free position goal as time expired.
Caili Cross and
Carly Katzman scored three goals apiece while
Piper Higgins added two with an assist.
Ruby Loesch and
Cailey Brousseau notched two saves each in 30 minutes apiece in goal.
CMS got on the board first with an opening-minute goal before Cross, Higgins and Katzman traded scores to put the Sagehens up 3-1. The Athenas scored two more before Glanville and
Madeleine Trapp found the back of the net. But CMS answered with two more goals, tying the game at 5-5 following the first quarter.
The Athenas scored two more to open the second quarter before Cross found the back of the net twice more in the final five minutes of the half, tying the game at 7-7 at halftime. CMS came out strong to open the third quarter with three unanswered goals. But Pomona-Pitzer fought back with scores from Higgins and Katzman. The Athenas scored once more before Glanville added another goal, as the Sagehens trailed 9-8 through three quarters.
Teams traded goals to start the final period, with CMS scoring first before
Catherine Faucette added a goal. The Athenas then scored to take a 13-11 advantage with 7:17 remaining. But Pomona-Pitzer refused to go down, as Katzman found the back of the net with 4:51 to go. Glanville then scored unassisted with 3:39 left, tying the game at 13-13.
With the game still tied and only 17 seconds to go, Glanville picked up a ground ball off a CMS turnover. The Athenas then committed a foul near their own goal with just two seconds to go. Glanville proceeded to take the free position opportunity, taking just one step before firing the ball into the back of the net as time expired and giving Pomona-Pitzer the dramatic 14-13 victory.
