Lacrosse Advances to SCIAC Tournament Championship Game with Win Over Chapman

CLAREMONT, CA — The Pomona-Pitzer women's lacrosse team kicked off the SCIAC Tournament with a commanding 16-3 victory over Chapman in the semifinals on Wednesday evening. The Sagehens will now host CMS in the championship game on Saturday, May 2, at 7:00 p.m. PT.

The Sagehens were led by Madeleine Trapp and Caili Cross, who each recorded a three-goal performance. Grace Tighe, Miranda Wiltberger, and Taylor Glanville each contributed two goals apiece, while Piper Higgins, Birdie Hawkins, Nora Leblanc, and Maria Favret each added one.  

Pomona-Pitzer established control early and found seven goals through the opening half, including two in the first quarter and five in the second. Tighe struck first with 13:53 left in the first quarter to put the Sagehens on the board. Trapp doubled the score at the 11:45 mark off a feed from Higgins, and Pomona-Pitzer carried a 2-0 lead into the second quarter. 

Higgins carried the momentum into the second quarter and scored with 14:58 left in the period, and Cross followed at the 13:51 mark. Trapp added her second goal of the night with 12:55 left on the clock, and Wiltberger found one at the 7:15 mark to extend the margin to 6-0. Tighe converted on a man-up opportunity with 6:14 left on the clock to make it 7-0. Chapman found one in the final seconds of the period, but the Sagehens entered halftime ahead 7-1. 

The Sagehens came out of the break and found six goals in the third quarter. Glanville scored a goal at the 14:17 mark, and Hawkins followed at the 9:13. Trapp then found another one at the 8:12 mark, and Cross extended the lead to 11-1 at the 7:40 mark. Leblanc struck at the 5:49, and Wiltberger capped the Sagehen scoring in the period with a goal at the 2:34 mark. Chapman attempted to catch up with a late free position goal, but Pomona-Pitzer entered the fourth quarter with a firm lead at 13-2. 

Glanville opened the fourth quarter with her second goal of the game at the 14:24 mark, and Cross completed her three-goal night at the 12:25 mark. Chapman added one more on a free position goal, but Favret sealed the victory with a goal at the 2:08 mark as the Sagehens wrapped up a 16-3 triumph over Chapman.
