Baseball Defeats La Verne 20-3 in Non-Conference Matchup

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team rolled past La Verne 20-3 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
 
Season Impact: The win puts the Sagehens at 25-12 (14-7 SCIAC) on the season.
 
Cooper Berry led the Pomona-Pitzer bats with eight RBI, going 3-of-3 from the plate with two doubles and a homer. Landon Hu posted three RBI while Greg Pierantoni, Kai Gonzaga and Peter Savas each had two. Lincoln Oelschlager earned the win from the mound, going 2.0 innings in relief with one strikeout, no hits and no earned runs. 
 
The Leopards got on the board first with a run in the first and two more in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Berry responded with a three-run blast to center field in the bottom of the third, tying the game at 3-3. The Sagehens then used a five-run fourth inning to go up 8-3. Savas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Berry belted a two-run double in the frame. 
 
Pomona-Pitzer added 12 runs in the fifth to take full control of the game. Savas was hit by another pitch with the bases loaded to start the scoring. Berry then cleared the bases with a three-run double down the right field line. Jack Gold drew a bases-loaded walk and Pierantoni notched a two-run double before Hu blasted a three-run shot to left center. Gonzaga added a two-run homer of his own to right field as the Sagehens led 20-3 through five. 
 
Dean Hoshide struck out a pair of batters in the sixth. Isaac Aguirre then came in with one out in the seventh and struck out La Verne's final batter, as Pomona-Pitzer came away with the 20-3 victory. 
 
Up Next: The Sagehens will close out the regular season this weekend with a three-game series against Occidental. The two teams will first square off in Los Angeles on Friday, May 1, at 3:00 p.m. PT.
